Platform 1 / Fighting Cocks. A Community Owned Pub for Middleton St George?

Dear Resident

We are seeking your help to save the Platform 1 /Fighting Cocks Pub

For most villages a pub is a vital service; it is a meeting place, a communication centre and an important lynchpin of village life. Much of the appeal of our village rests on its sense of community. It is the reason many people have moved here and remain here. The presence of a community pub would, we feel, greatly enhance that community spirit.

Platform 1 has been listed as an Asset of Community Value, but it is at risk.  The pub was built in the early 1830s to serve those using the Stockton & Darlington Railway Depot to the rear and the newly built station opposite. It is that link which makes this pub historically very important. There are proposals being worked up by Darlington Borough Council (and others) to create a walking a cycling route along the former railway line to the rear of the pub running from Witton Park to Stockton and this could bring in many new customers. It is hoped that it can be saved as a Community Pub, offering additional services that are not already provided by other community groups in the village, and also protect its link to the former historic 1825 Stockton & Darlington railway line.

This Community Pub would not take anything away from the other pubs in the village (the Havelock, the Oak Tree Inn, and the Devonport), but would aim to complement their vital service to the community with its own particular offering.

This questionnaire is the first step. We need to know your views on what might be provided and what would receive your support. Please be as honest and realistic as possible in your answers! Your response will be treated in confidence. It is entirely anonymous, unless you wish to add your name at the end.

We would also like to hear from you if you feel you could help in any way with the running of the pub. There will be a wide range of tasks to be done, from the initial setting up of the project to managing the enterprise and being involved in the day to day practical operation.

This kind of venture has been successfully achieved in other communities all over the UK. There are currently more than 56 co-operative pubs in the UK and most of these have been set up with the support of the charity Plunkett Foundation (www.plunkett.co.uk). Will our community be the next one? If you wish to speak directly to someone about this project please contact one of the following:
