Platform 1/Fighting Cocks – A Community Pub in Middleton St George? Results of Community Survey

As you will know, a community survey was held recently (which closed on Friday 14th August) to ask residents if you would support a proposal for a community pub.

Results of the Community Survey

Paper Survey in MSG – A questionnaire in A5 folded leaflet form was distributed to all households in MSG, and completed questionnaires were placed in a box in Londis, and the responses compiled.

Word document format of the Survey emailed to all Members of the Friends of Stockton & Darlington Railway – Completed questionnaires were returned, and the responses compiled.

The combined results can be found here: Patform 1 Survey Results (paper) Aug 2020 Platform 1 Survey (paper) Comments Aug 2020

Online SurveyMonkey – There was also an option to complete the same survey online

The results can be found here:  Platform 1 Survey (online) August 2020 Platform1 Survey (online) Comments Aug 2020

Thank you to everyone who responded to the survey.

Here is a summary of key findings:

  • The majority of respondents to both formats of survey think that it is very important to have a Community Pub in Middleton St George

  • Over 80% of respondents support the community acquiring Platform 1/Fighting Cocks

  • In terms of providing good meals at a fair price, there was a good spread of preferences for meals throughout the week and weekends. But there were some additional requests for gluten free and vegetarian options, morning coffee/teas and afternoon coffee/teas, as well as sandwiches and snacks throughout the day

  • When asked what additional services you would most like to see the pub offer, a family friendly area came out tops. And there were some additional requests for real ale/cask ale/craft beer.

  • When asked which other services you would like to see on offer, there was a good spread of preferences for the suggestions listed. However, a café with locally produced fresh products (including from allotments) was very popular, as was a local/railway theme linked to the Stockton & Darlington Railway, with an info hub.  Also, many people agreed with serving cyclists and walkers.  But it was also good to see that Older People’s Lunches was also a high priority, and a good number of people would support community use options, with lots of interesting additional suggestions for these.

  • From the paper and online surveys, respondents have indicated a total contribution to this project (via donations/community shares, etc.), should it prove viable, of £34,200, which is a good start to accessing match funding, etc.

  • Many of you have offered to provide your services as a volunteer, running the pub, professional advice and skills, and very importantly have expressed an interest in being part of the dedicated steering committee for the community pub project.

What Next?

The Parish Council, the Trustees of the Friends of Stockton & Darlington Railway, the MSG S&DR Heritage Group and the new community pub steering group will use the results of the community survey to help them secure the future of the pub.

We will also contact, at the appropriate time, those of you who have offered your assistance.

We will keep you all informed of progress.

Many thanks,

Cllr Catherine Gilsenan

Chair, Middleton St George Parish Council
